Meet Nikolai Ponomarev, postdoctoral researcher at Aalto University — and one of the people helping the EFP program see the bigger picture.
While many EFP researchers are working hands-on in the lab, Nikolai's role is different. As part of Work Package 9, he takes data from lab-scale experiments across the program and builds mathematical models of novel pulping processes — then uses those models to evaluate each concept's potential through techno-economic assessment and life cycle analysis. The goal: find pulping processes that deliver higher yield than kraft, with competitive costs, lower chemical and water cons

Creating an Analytical Toolbox for Emission Free Pulping
Meet Julia Chrzastowska, Doctoral Researcher at Åbo Akademi — and one of the scientists building the analytical foundation of the Emission Free Pulping program. Julia's work might not involve developing new pulping methods directly — but without it, those new methods would be flying blind. Her research focuses on understanding exactly what happens inside wood tissue at the cellular level during pulping. Using an array of advanced microscopy, spectroscopy, and surface analysis

Behind the scenes: Targeting pectin to reduce energy and chemical use as well as push for higher yield in pulping
In the Emission Free Pulping (EFP) program, Research Scientist Anniina Alenius at VTT is studying the role of pectin in the f ibre liberation process . Although pectin represents only about 2% of spruce, it is located in the middle lamella and primary cell wall, where neighbouring fibres are bound together. Its function in pulping and fibre liberation is still not fully understood. The hypothesis behind the research is that pectin may influence how strongly fibres
